my site | in space

Concept

In 2007 Ewelina Kołaczek and Newman Allen, the co-founders of Switch Performance, took over the Bethnal Green Workingmen’s Club for a couple of afternoons with a group of theatre-makers and performance artists. We did it because we were curious about what would happen and it seemed like a fun way to approach a space. What we discovered was that it’s a great way to create something unique, dynamic and inescapably live.

my site | in space embodies the essence of liveness. It creates a unique moment in space and time, where a group of artists come together to create performances, installations and other art pieces in response to that specific place. It happens and then it’s gone — like the best performance always does. Either you were there or you weren’t.

From 2007 to 2009, Ewelina and Newman produced and curated five editions of my site | in space in London’s vibrant creative East End. At that time spaces were easy to find and there were many emerging artists looking for places to develop new ideas. Over time Switch Performance became a loose collective of emerging artists, brought together by my site | in space and supported to create a wealth of other events.

Selection of images from editions 1 to 5

In 2019, following his move to Denmark, Newman revived the project in Copenhagen. The 6th edition was made in collaboration with Nina Lund Westerdahl and Keith Lim on the interactive art studio Illutron.

COVID-19 put things on hold for a few years and my site | in space returned in March 2023. The 7th edition was a collaboration between Copenhagen Platform and Assemble Theatre Collective, taking place at Huset KBH.
